The hotel is in an delicate area for walking and visiting the red squirrel Sanctuary which is around two minutes walk from the hotel reception. |The room we had was clean and comfortable. A bath and shower, TV ,hairdryer and and tea and coffee making facilities. The bed was extremely comfortable and we had excellent central heating that you control yourself plus a big window to open. The food was excellent.

Just returned home after a night at this hotel. We were on a DBB tariff and for the price we paid I really can't fault it. The food was somewhat basic but very nice, the drinks were reasonably priced and the room was cozy and spacious. The staff are extremely helpful and the squirell sanctuary is a little gem. The decor my be a little dated but I think it adds to the charm and character of the building. Me and my partner would both definitely stay again and I'm looking at celebrating my 40th there with all my family next year

Went with Shearings on coach trip. Food excellent value hotel very welcoming and very friendly staff. Saw the red squirrels every morning before going on trips. Hotel in secluded location so didn't venture out at night. Would definitely recommend a trip to Lake District.

I'm sure this hotel is better in Summer but in Winter the public areas are very cold . One log fire & a couple of radiators were inadequate for such a large area . Our room 17 was equally as cold though we were given a fan heater when we complained . Others in our party had warm rooms & found it a different experience. Staff were lovely and food okay but the hotel is n need of refurbishment. We wouldn't stay again or recommend to others

Excellent location with the highlight being able to see the red squirrels. We had stayed before but it wasn't as clean as it used to be. It states dog friendly but what it actually means is your dog can share your room with you, and one dog bowl is provided. The only room is the main building you and your dog can go in is the dining room behind the reception, this is not the main dining room and you will need to carry your breakfast from the opposite end of the building and through the busy reception, there was a bike race leaving the morning we stayed so you had to dodge the cyclists several times as you went back and forth for juice, toast and cooked breakfasts, the only thing brought to your table was tea or coffee. The dining room carpet was covered in food bits and dog hair and the seat on the next table had some kind of food spills down the side and they were still there after 4 days, add to that a glass door panel covered in mucky finger prints, never cleaned and breakfast was a get it over and done with experience. As our stay was a 3-5 days length a full service was promised, again disappointed linens not changed, no hoover run over carpet, basic hygiene for a room with a dog I would say. We stayed in the bath house, the room having been partially redecorated since our last visit, but this time we had to ask for the bar for the toilet roll holder, the bathroom light was filthy, the top of the hot tap was missing and the shower rail was rusty. To be honest we used the hotel as a base and spent little time inside the room. It is such a shame as the reception staff were lovely, the location perfect and the food we had was really nice. The cleanliness and the lack of thought put in to how customers with dogs are welcomed/incorporated into hotel life sadly let it down.

My wife and I arrived on Friday for a 2night stay,from the word go we were made to feel very welcome, we found that all the staff were very helpful , friendly and accommodating.its a very remote setting but the grounds are stunning with red squirrels in abundance!! Room nice, king-size bed was very comfy.all in all a very enjoyable break.if we had to knit pick, we sat by the window in the restaurant and noticed quite a few cobwebs on the inside of the glass , just a feather duster every now and again would rectify this minor problem .
