My brother and his wife had appointed Pengelly and Ryland to be the executor of their wills in 2021. Sadly, my sister-in-law passed away in 2022 and then suddenly my brother died in May 2023. I have been trying for the past 15 months to move my brother's wishes forward as he left all his estate to 3 charities. During this time Pengelly and Ryland have been dragging their heels 15 months after his passing his house remains empty and they have not even informed the 3 benefactors. I have emailed and called them so many times leaving messages with no response whatsoever. I would advise you to avoid any contact with this firm or any of its many subsidiaries. I Wish I could give the no stars. as they deserve 0 for causing me such stress and anxiety for so long !

I recently employed Pengelly and Rylands to sell my father's apartment as executor of his estate. Despite being a very complex sale with challenging aspects, Sally Oatridge was exceptional at dealing with the issues relating to the sale and the service she provided. Her communication was excellent, she showed empathy for the difficult situation, and her knowledge and speed at which she was able to manage complex conveyancing legal matters was exemplary. I highly recommend the conveyancing services at their Tenterden office.

No responses to emails over a two month period and that from a partner of the firm. Telephone calls were completely ignored.
Both our selling agents and our solicitors were at their wits end trying to progress our sale. As a retired Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, I have never come across such an unprofessional firm and hope I will never do so again. Whatever you do don't use Pengelly & Rylands.

I have had a terrible first (and last) experience with Pengelly and Rylands. I nearly lost the sale of my house because, the solicitor i was allocated, was not answering emails or returning phone calls from Myself, Ashford Borough Council or from my mortgage adviser. I resorted to copying the Managing Director into emails, no response from him either. The receptionist is extremely blunt and unapproachable too.

Then to rub salt in, approximately one month after completion, then an assistant solicitor from the firm, thinks it is acceptable, to ask me to pay an additional fee of £95! I paid the balance in full and have a receipt for it. I even confirmed with the solicitor at quoting stage, that their would be no additional fees from the quoted amount.

In my experience Pengelly and Rylands are unprofessional, poor value for money and the customer service is disgraceful. I was warned against using them, but ignored the warning and i learnt the hard way.

I agree with the previous reviewer! Do not use this firm of solicitors! I rang only to leave my contact details so that IF my estranged mother is a client of theirs they could contact me on her death. All the other solicitors firms I spoke to said, quite rightly, that they couldn't tell me whether my mother is a client of theirs or not, but if I left my contact details they could put them on file if she is their client. The young lady on reception rang me back to tell me that her more senior colleague had said it was ok to confirm that my mother is not a client of theirs, which is a breach of my mother's confidence. This information should not have been given out. I was also given incorrect information because either the information I gave the young recpetionist had not been realyed to her more senior colleague correctly or they had misunderstood what they had been told. Either way not great and very unprofessinal especially considering they are dealing with legal matters. They need to listen properly and get the information correct.

AVOID using this company. Shocking service in the context of a property sale and purchase. Slow response, and an archaic and out of date way of working. I was only given direct access to my designated solicitor 2 times. Due to the delays in service many issues with the property purchase went unresolved and unchecked. Rude, ambivalent staff who seemed surprised at requests for information even on the day of completion itself. Over £5,000 for the privilege. Never again.

Called about setting up a PoA. They promised to call back in a few minutes as the person that would handle it wasn't answering their phone. over 2 hrs later still waiting.

Called a rival firm in Tenterden and they got everything sorted and asked me to email the details so that they could draft it for signature tomorrow. Now *that's* service.

Helpful and reassuring in dealing with my late fathers estate. They walked me through the process and were very patient and understanding. Very responsive to emails. Would recommend and use again.
