Three of us arrived on a Saturday evening- two cyclists with a 59 year age gap -and me, the back up driver. I can't fault this very pleasant hotel, but it was the friendly, helpful team of staff who made it for us, including the chef who really put herself out to meet my unusual dietary needs. They made it a place I will remember with a smile, and hope to return to.

My wife and I selected the George Inn as a base as we celebrated our wedding anniversary. Hotel looked great on the website and the bedroom was excellent. Walk-in shower (should be mandatory in all hotels), plumbing that worked and a mirror with a heater to prevent condensation spoiling the view.|And then the restaurant - oh dear! The staff were young, friendly, eager to help but untrained. They did not know what beers were available, which dishes were not available and no effort had been made to refill the simple ceramic salt cellar.|Typical conversation with customers at a nearby table: "What is the soup the day?"|"I will go and find out." "What is the pie of the day?" .|"I will go and find out." |On our second breakfast the dishes were delivered as ordered, but there had been a delay whilst the waitress completed a phone call. Two pats of butter had been placed on top of the toast and I guess the plate had been left under an IR lamp to keep warm.|No surprise that the butter was molten and it was so funny that I did not have the strength to complain.|Hatherleigh is in Devon - as was the fictional "Fawlty Towers". The George Inn suffers from the same mismanagement. Must be something to do with the geography.

Stayed for 3 nights for work and found the rooms very spacious and very clean. All staff members I met were very friendly and very helpful. The food was great and at a reasonable price for the area and was a quick friendly service so hats off to the kitchen staff and the servers . I would highly recommend The George and if I am back in the area I would not hesitate on staying here again

Appalling service! Shown to a table, and drinks order taken so great start.... but that's where it ended. No menu given to us from the waiting staff, we had to find that ourselves. When the waiting staff came for our order they didn't know what the dishes of the day were, I mean really, basics. We ordered starters and a main each. A starter arrived on its own, delivered by the kitchen staff who quickly ran away. We waited and waited but no second starter arrived nor did any staff come to do a courtesy check. When the same member of staff that delivered the lonely starter, came back to clear, they thought the best course of action when asked to remove the second starter from the bill was to argue with my Girlfriend. Who knew, apparently that's a bad idea.... needless to say we didn't stay for the mains. Still at least the chippy was open down the road.
The rooms are lovely, spacious and well decorated. The TV might as well be another wall painting though.
I'd recommend finding another town in Dartmoor to stop and explore, as overall at the George Inn you will be disappointed ?

Beautiful hotel, completely rebuilt after a fire. It is a copy of the original that was several centuries old.|Clean rooms, very quiet hotel and town.|Good breakfast, although adding fruits would be an excellent idea.|I paid around 75 pounds for a room for two, with a double bed with breakfast included (end of April 2024) A very good price, if it weren't for the bed being very narrow, I couldn't sleep well, with the risk of turning over and falling to the ground.

The room wasn’t ready when we arrived (after the advised check in time). The kitchen fans was completely unacceptable and then the boiler noise was incessant all night. |The restaurant staff were helpful and friendly ||The room was otherwise clean and pleasant (bath a bit scummy?) |Good location.

When we arrived at this place we were very impressed with the exterior as it’s a very traditional looking building with a thatched roof, even though it was rebuilt in 2010 following a fire. Inside it is characterful, the staff were friendly and helpful and our room was very nice. We ate in the evening and the food was very tasty although the seasonal vegetables were not seasonal.. but that didn’t detract and I didn’t say anything because they were very tasty. The reason we have taken off a star is because it is a little tired in places and the courtyard area was grubby, and damp with broken tables and litter which was unwelcoming upon arrival. Also the bathroom was perfectly adequate with plenty of hot water but the bath panel was corroded and broken. The towel rail was hanging off. But again I must emphasise overall we had a lovely one night stay and we would definitely return.
