My Barrister was Greg Williams. I had been in divorce litigation for 4 years, however the complexity stretched relatable data to 7 years.
Greg, a conscientious and honourable man, like all good Barristers has a number of clients. However, it always astonished me how focused and in the detail of each aspect of the case he was, considering the sheer volume of disparate data.
During the 2-day Final Hearing I watched as his agile mind complemented the attention to detail of his preparation to make him an impenetrable wall. The constantly moving parts of this case included, children, international finance and assets, income from two countries and a substantial inheritance. Yet he moved between each one, without missing one beat.
It was clear that Greg had planned his case as if thinking of how the other side would act. This gave him an almost precognitive appearance not allowing the Respondent’s counsel room to manipulate or probe. It was then Greg unencumbered by the Respondent’s counsel was able to get to the heart of the problems, site case law and legal premise to allow the Arbiter the ability to see the facts of the case. After 2+ stressful and testing years into the process of separation and divorce, I had my final remaining hurdle to overcome which was the financial remedy. I was the majority asset holder – over 90%. Hence, this case was very important to me as it was more for my young son who has additional needs, and protecting his future inheritance and therefore, I was being very particular in appointing the right Barrister for the FR.

After reading Matthew Shaw’s experience, a lot of it had resonated with my case. Such as Matthew had experience dealing with children with disabilities, applicant wives who had experienced domestic abuse (mostly psychological in my case) and experience with ex-husbands who were artificially lowering their asset pot by hiding them! From that point onwards I knew that Matthew was the Barrister for me and there was no looking back.

After 2 years of getting inconsistent and contradictory advice from different solicitors, with Matthew, i felt as though at last i found someone who knew what they were talking about! He had sound knowledge of the law, grasped every fine detail of my case very quickly. had great attention to detail and produced an outstanding position statement, which even my solicitor commented as being exceptional. More importantly, Matthew reassured me that this case will not run any longer than it needs to as he can see the emotional impact it was having on me. As my ex-husband remarried a month before the FDA hearing, Matthew provided much needed clarity on the uncertainty regarding the FR in light of the remarriage, the possible outcomes of the hearing alongside his recommendations.

My hearing was a remote hearing, Matthew kindly invited me to his office so that we can dial in together. This was very accommodating of Matthew and it put me at ease, as going through an FR hearing on your own remotely, when you’re the majority asset holder, can be pretty daunting.

My ex and his legal team were very unreasonable, unprofessional, most challenging and their litigation was poor throughout. Despite this, Matthew always maintained calm, diplomacy, integrity and professionalism. Although my ex walked away with nothing as he fell in the “remarriage trap”, Matthew went above and beyond by trying to deter the other party from ever making any future claims on my pension by furnishing them with facts around the law which the other side were clearly in need of. I will definitely recommend Matthew Shaw to anyone who is intending to go through FR. Specially those single parents who are going through the unsettling motions of the judicial process. Its not just about getting a Barrister who gets “the job done” and sees you as “another client”, but also someone who can get connect with you on a human to human level, feels your emotional struggle and genuinely wants to secure the best possible outcome for you and your child. For me, Matthew Shaw was exactly that!
