When putting our house up for sale in the summer of 2023, our estate agent - Davis & Bowring of KIrkby Lonsdale - warned us that many house sales have been held back or even failed due to the non-compliancy of fairly recent Environment Agency septic tank drainage rules. D&B recommended that we have an assessment done of our private/shared (3 properties) drainage. They sent us a list of 5 outfits that may be able to help. I tried two - Enviroguard and Fawcett Percolation Services Ltd. I had no previous experience of such matters. Yes - Enviroguard would do an inspection and report but no follow up after this. I had a long and patient telephone conversation with Martyn Fawcett. He was admirable in his explanation but non-persuaviseness of his service. It was very tempting to go for the cheaper option (maybe one third the price) but it was quite apparent that we would end dealing with the Environment Agency ourselves - not something we relished. We decided to invite Martyn to inspect our shared tank and soak away and the complete drainage of all three houses which use the one tank. The cost and ownership of the report would be solely ours. It turned out that the system failed the latest EA rules but only by about 5%. Martyn recommended that we apply for a bespoke permit to allow us to continue to use the current system. With considerable and admirable diplomatic skill Martyn convinced the two neighbours that it was in their interests to apply (and pay their share) of the permit application at the same time. To our surprise, Martyn was successful in bringing the neighbours on board - after all - if they ever wanted to sell their house/houses then a permit would be required. The process was long and involved but Martyn kept us up to date at all times and where the EA were at with the application. No fault of Martyn's but the whole process took 8 months but most importantly the permit application has been successful at a fraction of the cost of installing new compliant drainage systems. We cannot recommend Martyn Fawcett more highly. Great to deal with, patient, clear and quick to respond. Hugh Symonds

Following their completed inspection, they also advised on and planned the new system, arranging quotes and the appointment of our chosen installer.

Martin gave a very thorough and professional service. He surveyed a septic tank system shared by six properties and reported on its compliance status. He showed excellent diplomatic skills in dealing with the various property owners not all of whom were necessarily keen on having the survey carried out in and around their properties. The finished report was of a high standard and helped us establish exactly the status of the system and where the problems were with it.
